Writing characters
Where these characters come from
子
An infant in swaddling, arms free.
上
A mark placed above a baseline: up, above.
电
Lightning streaking out of a cloud — now electricity.
本
木 (tree) with a stroke marking the root: origin, source — and the measure word for books.
儿
A child with the top of the skull still open — hence 'child', and the -r suffix.
Sentence patterns
Position words after the noun
| Thing | 在 | Place + position |
|---|---|---|
| 书 | 在 | 桌子上面。 |
| 电脑 | 在 | 书前面。 |
| 猫 | 在 | 椅子下面。 |
上面 / 下面 / 前面 / 后面 come AFTER the place, not before it.
Tone pairs
Words whose second syllable is unstressed (neutral tone).
A third tone before another tone is a low dip, not a full fall-rise — it only rises when the syllable stands alone.
