Don't confuse with

牛 (niú, ox/cow) has its top stroke poking out above the horizontal cross — like a pair of horns. 午 (wǔ, noon) keeps that top stroke tucked below the crossing point instead, closer and more contained. Horns sticking up = ox; nothing sticking up = noon.
