Business cards & first meetings
Business cards (名片) are exchanged with both hands, held so the text faces the recipient right-side up. Take a moment to actually read the card you receive rather than pocketing it immediately — glancing at it briefly and setting it down shows respect for the person it represents.
Never write on someone's card in front of them, fold it, or put it straight in a back pocket — sitting on someone's card is considered quite rude, since the card is treated as an extension of the person's identity and face. During a meeting, place received cards neatly on the table in front of you rather than stacking them away immediately. If you're doing business in China, having cards printed with Chinese on one side is a meaningful courtesy.
Offer your card to the most senior person present first, and expect a slight nod or informal bow with the exchange. First-meeting small talk often covers travel, health, and pleasantries before any business — direct questions about age or salary are common and not rude among Chinese contacts, though it's fine to answer vaguely or redirect if you'd rather not share. Punctuality is taken seriously, and seating at a first meeting is often arranged by hierarchy, with the guest of honor seated facing the door.
