Internet slang (dates fast!)
Chinese internet slang turns over fast — a term that was everywhere last year can mark you as out of touch this year. Treat every slang word as having a freshness date: understand them all, but deploy them sparingly and listen for what people around you actually still say.
As of 2026: 内卷 (involution / rat-race) and 躺平 (lying flat) have settled into normal vocabulary; 摆烂 (deliberately letting things rot) and 破防 (emotionally gotten-to) are still current; 666 (impressive) and 靠谱 (reliable) are long-stable; yyds ('eternal GOAT') and 绝绝子 peaked years ago and now read as dated; 佛系 (Buddha-like chill) is understood but no longer fresh. When in doubt, recognition is the goal — stale slang from a learner lands worse than no slang at all.
