别/没/不 + 把 + Object + Verb + 成/给/在 + Complement
The 把 (bǎ) construction, advanced — negation placement and 成/给/在 complements
Building on the basic 把-sentence, two things trip learners up at HSK 3. First, negation and modal verbs (不, 没, 别, 想, 要, 应该) always sit BEFORE 把, never between 把 and the verb — 我把作业没做完 is wrong; it must be 我没把作业做完. Second, the complement after the verb can specify exactly what happened: 成 (chéng) shows the object was turned INTO something else — 他把美元换成人民币了 (he changed the dollars into RMB); 给 (gěi) shows the object was handed over TO someone — 我把书还给你了 (I gave the book back to you); 在 (zài) shows the object ended up settled AT a location — 他把车停在门口了 (he parked the car at the door). The deciding question: do I need to negate or add a modal verb — put it before 把, never after? And which complement matches the outcome — became something (成), went to someone (给), or ended up somewhere (在)? A bare verb still can never end a 把-sentence, even here.
Examples
- 我没把作业做完,明天再交。wǒ méi bǎ zuò yè zuò wán, míng tiān zài jiāo
I didn't finish the homework, I'll hand it in tomorrow.
- 他把美元换成人民币了。tā bǎ měi yuán huàn chéng rén mín bì le
He changed the dollars into RMB.
- 请把这本书还给图书馆。qǐng bǎ zhè běn shū huán gěi tú shū guǎn
Please return this book to the library.
Common mistake
✗ Wrong: 我把作业没做完。
✓ Right: 我没把作业做完。
Negation goes before 把, not between 把 and the verb — 把 always keeps the object and verb glued together as a unit.
Practice this pattern
Fill in the missing character:
我_把作业做完,明天再交。
I didn't finish the homework, I'll hand it in tomorrow.
