不但 + Clause A, 而且(也/还) + Clause B
不但...而且... (búdàn...érqiě...) — 'not only...but also...'
不但...而且... stacks a second, stronger or additional fact on top of the first — 'not only A, but also B', where B usually escalates or reinforces A: 她不但漂亮,而且很聪明 (she's not only pretty, but also very smart). If both clauses share the same subject, 不但 comes AFTER the subject (她不但漂亮...); if the two clauses have different subjects, 不但 comes BEFORE its own subject, right at the start of the clause: 不但他去了,而且他妹妹也去了 (not only did he go, but his sister went too). 而且 is often reinforced with 也 or 还 right after it. The deciding question: is the second fact simply additional/stronger information about the same topic (→不但...而且...), and does each clause have its own subject or share one — that decides where exactly 不但 sits.
Examples
- 她不但漂亮,而且很聪明。tā bú dàn piào liang, ér qiě hěn cōng ming
She's not only pretty, but also very smart.
- 不但他去了,而且他妹妹也去了。bú dàn tā qù le, ér qiě tā mèi mei yě qù le

- 这家饭馆不但便宜,而且菜做得还特别好吃。zhè jiā fàn guǎn bú dàn pián yi, ér qiě cài zuò de hái tè bié hǎo chī

Common mistake
✗ Wrong: 他不但去了,而且不但他妹妹也去了。
✓ Right: 不但他去了,而且他妹妹也去了。
When the two clauses have different subjects (he vs. his sister), 不但 belongs at the very start of its clause, before that clause's own subject — not repeated or placed after the first subject.
