越来越 + Adjective/Verb | 越 + Clause A + 越 + Clause B
越来越 (yuè lái yuè) 'more and more' vs 越...越... (yuè...yuè...) 'the more...the more...'
Both patterns use 越 (yuè, 'increasingly') but describe different kinds of change. 越来越 + adjective/verb tracks a SINGLE thing getting more so over time: 天气越来越冷 (the weather is getting colder and colder). 越...越... links TWO clauses where one thing changing causes another to change in step: 越学越有意思 (the more you study it, the more interesting it gets), 他越说越生气 (the more he talked, the angrier he got) — the same subject usually does both halves. The deciding question: is only one thing changing over time on its own (→越来越 + one adjective/verb), or does a change in one thing drive a matching change in another (→越 A 越 B, two clauses)? Note 越来越 never needs a second 越 — 越来越来越冷 is wrong; that double structure belongs only to 越...越....

The more he explained, the more confused everyone got, until in the end fewer and fewer people could understand him.
Common mistake
✗ Wrong: 这个城市越来越越大。
✓ Right: 这个城市越来越大。
越来越 only takes one adjective/verb after it — don't add a second 越 (that double-越 pattern belongs to the separate 越...越... construction for two linked clauses).
